Macherida is a tiny sandy cove on the west side of Akrotiri, just past Tersanas, about 25 minutes from Chania. A few metres of sand between two rocky headlands, deep blue and very clear water, and nothing else: no sunbeds, no canteen, no shade. For decades it has been a quiet spot for naturists and the LGBTQ+ community of Chania, though everyone is welcome and nudity is tolerated, not required.
| From Chania | About 14 km, 25–30 minutes |
|---|---|
| Access | Narrow road, then a 5-minute rocky path |
| Beach | Very small sandy cove, deep water close to shore |
| Facilities | None (no toilets, no shade, no lifeguard) |
| Best for | Swimming, snorkelling, quiet |
| Not for | Toddlers and non-swimmers |
What It Is Like
The sand is very small, enough for a handful of groups, so arrive early. The water gets deep quickly, which is ideal for swimming but not for paddling. The rocks on the north side are the best for snorkelling, and you will often see yachts anchored in the bay for the same reason. The cove faces southwest, so it is usually calm when the north wind blows, and the afternoon light is lovely.
What Recent Visitors Keep Saying
- “Crystal clear water”, among the clearest on Akrotiri.
- “Tiny”: on summer weekends it fills up fast.
- “Bring an umbrella”: there is no natural shade.
- “Parking is very limited”, so do not block the road or house driveways.

The Pond and the Name
Next to the road above the beach is a small brackish pond in a rocky hollow, home to turtles, waterbirds and harmless water snakes. Leave the animals alone. The name comes from machairi (knife), after the cape’s shape, or from the wild gladiolus called macherida that grows in the area.
Warning: No lifeguard and deep water right from the sand. Only for confident swimmers, and children should be watched closely.
Getting There
Drive towards Chorafakia and Tersanas; just before Tersanas, take the turn for Macherida. The road narrows for the last stretch. Park on the roadside at the end and walk 5 minutes down. The Chania–Stavros city bus stops nearby (about 1 km walk). Boat trips from Chania’s old harbour also visit the coves of this coast. There is no Uber or Bolt, so book any taxi return in advance.

Before You Go
- Water, snacks and a beach umbrella.
- Shoes with grip for the path.
- Toilets and supplies at Tersanas (1 km) or Chorafakia.
- Arrive before 9:30 or after 16:00 in summer.
Where to Stay
Kalathas or Stavros put Macherida and the other coves of Akrotiri a few minutes away.
FAQ
Macherida or Seitan Limania?
