Sweetwater Beach Chania

Sweetwater Beach Chania (Glyka Nera): The Complete Guide

Sweetwater (Glyka Nera) has no road. It is a long beach of small white pebbles under huge cliffs between Chora Sfakion and Loutro, with deep blue, very clear water. You arrive by boat or on foot. Its name comes from the fresh water that seeps up under the pebbles: move a few stones at the water’s edge and the hole fills with cool fresh water. That is why the sea here is noticeably colder than elsewhere on the south coast.

What It Is Like

The beach is about 1 km long. The pebbles are smooth and continue into the sea, which is shallow for a few metres and then drops into deep blue. Visibility is exceptional for snorkelling along the rocks. The only building is a small taverna-canteen on the rocks at the west end, open in season. There are some tamarisk trees for shade, and the rest you have to bring or rent.

There are roughly three zones: near the taverna, families and swimsuits; then naturist couples; and at the far end, long-stay campers under the trees. Nobody bothers anyone. If you walk down from the Chora Sfakion side, you arrive at the naturist end first; keep walking west if you prefer.

What Recent Visitors Keep Saying

  • “The clearest, coldest water of the trip.” Wonderful on a hot day, a shock for people who feel the cold.
  • “Bring your own food and water.” The canteen is small, and opinions on service and prices are mixed.
  • “Less free shade than we expected.” Parts of the beach under the cliff are fenced off because of rockfall, and sunbeds take much of the shade.
  • “Check the last boat.” The most repeated advice; nobody wants the climb back up at 18:00 in July.

Warning: falling rocks. There have been rockfalls from the cliffs above, including a fatal accident in the past. Do not set up right under the cliff face, even for the shade, respect the fences, and keep away from the rock wall after rain or if you hear goats above.

Getting There

By boat (easiest)

Small boats and water taxis run from Chora Sfakion and Loutro in season, taking about 10–15 minutes. Times change by month and weather, so check at the port and note the last return. Boats land at the rocks by the canteen, so expect a big step, or wet feet on a choppy day; not ideal for people with limited mobility.

On foot

From Chora Sfakion, drive about 4 km up the road towards Anopoli to the E4 sign; the path descends to the beach in 30–45 minutes. From Loutro, the E4 coastal path takes about an hour along the cliff, with some exposed sections. Neither is technical, but both are rocky and completely exposed to the sun.

Warning: In July and August, do not walk the paths at midday. There is no shade and the rock radiates heat. Go early, wear proper shoes (not flip-flops), and carry at least 1.5 litres per person. If you have vertigo, take the boat from Loutro rather than the cliff path.

From Chania

The road goes via Vrysses, the Askyfou plateau and the hairpins down to Chora Sfakion. Allow 1.5–2 hours, more in summer traffic. For the morning boats, leave Chania by 08:00. There is only 1–2 KTEL buses a day to Chora Sfakion, so for a day trip a car is far easier.

The Fresh Water

There is no single spring: rain falling on the White Mountains filters through the limestone and comes out at sea level all along the beach. Dig a little hole near the water’s edge and it fills with cool fresh water. It is fun and good for rinsing off, but bring your own drinking water.

Before You Go

  • Water and food in a cool bag.
  • Water shoes or sandals; the pebbles get very hot by midday.
  • Cash for the boat and canteen.
  • Very weak mobile signal on the beach.
  • Best months: late May–June and September, when it is quieter and the walks are cooler.

Where to Stay

Stay in Chora Sfakion or Loutro to have the beach early in the morning before the boats arrive.

FAQ

Is it OK for children?

For children who are comfortable in deep water and on rough ground, yes. For toddlers it is difficult: pebbles, deep water and boat landing on rocks.

Sweetwater or Elafonisi?

Completely different. Elafonisi is shallow and sandy, ideal for families. Sweetwater is wild, deep and cold, ideal for swimmers who want to feel far from everything.

Combine With

  • Loutro: the car-free village an hour away on foot or 10 minutes by boat.
  • Chora Sfakion: the port and base for the area.
  • Imbros Gorge: in the morning, then the boat to Sweetwater in the afternoon.
  • Frangokastello: sand and a castle, 15 km east.

Local tip: Arrive mid-morning on a weekday in late May or early June: the tamarisks are green, the water is cold and clear, and the E4 hikers have not started passing yet.
