Kalathas is where people from Chania go when they want a proper sandy beach 20 minutes from town. It is a small bay with fine sand, shallow clear water, pine trees on the hills behind and a little islet you can swim to. On a weekday in June it is lovely. On a Sunday in August, half of Akrotiri is there.
| From Chania | About 13 km, 20 minutes (on the way to the airport/Akrotiri) |
|---|---|
| Beach | Fine sand, about 300 m, shallow water |
| Facilities | Sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, toilets, lifeguard in season, two beach tavernas |
| Best for | Families, a quick beach close to town |
| Parking | Roadside, tight on summer weekends |
| Bus | City bus line Chania–Stavros stops in the village |
What It Is Like
The main beach is short, with sandy seabed and almost no rocks. It stays shallow for a long way, which is perfect for small children. The islet is about 200 m out, an easy swim for most adults. Past the rocks at the west end (on your right when you face the sea), there is a second, unorganised beach: no sunbeds, quieter, ideal if you bring your own things.
What Recent Visitors Keep Saying
- “Ideal for small kids”: shallow, sandy, with facilities and a lifeguard.
- “Very busy at weekends”, with locals as well as tourists. Weekdays are much calmer.
- “Sunbeds are gone by 10:30” in July and August.
- “Parking is the hard part.” Come early or park a few minutes away.

Local tip: On strong north-wind days, Kalathas can get waves. Then cross to Marathi on the other side of Akrotiri, which is usually calm.
Facilities and Food
The organised part has sunbeds, umbrellas, showers, changing cabins, toilets and a lifeguard in summer. Part of the beach stays free for towels. In season there is equipment for paddleboard and kayak. Two tavernas sit on the beach with simple food (grilled fish, salads, cold drinks). For a supermarket, bakery or ATM, go to Kounoupidiana, 5 minutes away.
Getting There
By car, head towards the airport/Akrotiri and follow signs for Kalathas; it takes about 20 minutes. The last section is a narrow road that backs up on summer weekends. By bus, the Chania–Stavros city bus line stops in the village a short walk from the beach, several times a day; check the current timetable. By taxi, it is around 20 minutes, but book the return; there are no taxis waiting on Akrotiri, and no Uber or Bolt.

Where to Stay in Kalathas
Kalathas has apartments and small hotels near the beach: quieter than Chania, 20 minutes from town and 10 minutes from the airport.
FAQ
Kalathas or Stavros?
Both are shallow and family-friendly. Stavros has the dramatic mountain from Zorba the Greek and a round lagoon; Kalathas has pine trees, the islet and the second quiet beach.
Is the water clean?
Generally very clean. After storms or heavy rain, seaweed or debris can wash in for a day.
