Tersanas Beach Chania

Tersanas Beach Chania: A Local Guide to the Akrotiri Peninsula’s Quietest Cove

Tersanas is a small cove on the west side of Akrotiri, 20 minutes from Chania, that most tourists drive past on their way to Stavros. The name comes from the old word for boatyard, and a small pier still divides the cove into two sandy beaches. The water is very shallow and, because the cove is closed, it is usually calm when the north wind is blowing elsewhere. There are also trees at the back of the beach for real shade.

What It Is Like

You can walk 20–30 metres out and still be waist-deep, which is perfect for toddlers. The main beach is longer; the second is on the other side of the pier, below the taverna. Both are calm. The surroundings are plain Mediterranean scrub and a small harbour: not a postcard, but a good, easy beach. Between the two beaches the rocks have some snorkelling, clearest early in the morning.

What Recent Visitors Keep Saying

  • “Great for little ones”: shallow, calm, with trees for shade.
  • “Small and full at weekends.” Locals know it, so come before 10:00 on Saturday and Sunday.
  • “Sometimes litter after busy days.” In a closed cove, whatever floats in stays for a while. Weekday mornings are cleanest.
  • “Little fish nibble your feet”: harmless, and children usually love it.

Facilities

Both beaches have sunbeds and umbrellas, with a canteen for drinks and snacks and a taverna above the pier for a proper meal. There are showers and toilets. There is a ramp, but some steps too, so if you need full accessibility, check in advance.

Local tip: Just around the corner is Macherida, a small cove with no facilities, popular with naturists. It is quieter, but bring everything with you.

Getting There

By car, follow signs for Akrotiri and Chorafakia; it takes about 20 minutes, with free parking near the beach. The Chania–Stavros city bus stops nearby several times a day; check current times and do not miss the last one. A taxi is short, but book the return; there is no Uber or Bolt.

FAQ

Tersanas, Kalathas or Stavros?

Tersanas is the calmest and has shade. Kalathas is bigger, with an islet and more facilities, but more exposed to wind. Stavros has the Zorba scenery and the round lagoon. All three are within 5 km, so you can easily do two in one day.

Local tip: A perfect Akrotiri day: Tersanas in the morning while it is calm, Agia Triada after lunch, and a late swim at Stavros with the sun setting on the mountain.
