Chania works very well with children. The city is small and walkable, tavernas welcome kids until late, and within half an hour you have bays with water so shallow that toddlers can sit in it. When to Go
June and September are ideal: the sea is warm, and the beaches are not packed. In July and August it is hot (often 32°C+) and the famous beaches fill up by 10:00, so plan beach mornings, a nap or the pool at midday, and the town in the evening. Children love the harbour after dark, and you will see local kids out at 22:00.
Best Beaches for Children
- Marathi (25 min, Akrotiri): two small sandy coves, sheltered from the north wind, with tavernas right on the sand. Our top pick for toddlers. Water shoes help on the rocky spots.
- Kalyves (25 min east): long sandy beach with shallow water and sunbeds, plus a nice village for lunch.
- Agioi Apostoloi / Chrysi Akti (10–15 min west): sandy bays sheltered from waves, sunbeds and a playground nearby.
- Nea Chora (10 min walk from the old town): a city beach for a quick swim when no one wants to get in the car.
- Elafonisi (1.5 h): shallow lagoon kids love, but the long drive and crowds make it better for older children, arriving before 9:30.
Not for small children: Seitan Limania has a steep, rocky path down, rocky entry into deep water and no shade. Keep it for an adults’ afternoon. Balos in August is also very hot and exposed with little ones: if you go, take the boat, a sunshade and plenty of water.
Beyond the Beach
- Harbour and lighthouse: walk the breakwater to the lighthouse (no railings, so hold hands), then visit Firkas fortress and the Maritime Museum. Go early in the morning or after 18:00.
- Glass-bottom boat from the harbour to Thodorou or Lazaretta island: 1–2 hours with a swim stop, easy and loved by kids.
- Limnoupolis water park (about 8 km, Varypetro): slides, a lazy river and a kids’ area; open roughly June to September. Check hours online.
- Lake Kournas (45 min): pedal boats, turtles and ducks. Combine with the beach at Georgioupolis.
- Aptera (20 min): Roman cisterns and a fortress with a view; good for curious older children.
- Botanical Park (Fournes, 20 min): fruit trees, ducks and paths, cooler than the coast.
Imbros: The Family Gorge
Samaria (16 km, a big descent) is too much for most children under 10–11. Imbros is the family version: about 8 km downhill, 2.5–3 hours, with narrow passages that kids love. It is one-way: park at Imbros village, walk down to Komitades, and take a taxi back up (drivers wait there for exactly this). Lunch and a swim at Frangokastello afterwards. Start early in summer: there is little shade in the lower part.
Eating Out
Children are welcome everywhere, and nobody minds noise. The menu works for picky eaters too: grilled chicken, souvlaki, chips, pasta, bread and yoghurt. Expect locals to eat around 21:00. Skip the front row of tavernas on the harbour, where you pay for the view, and walk one street back.
Note: The Municipal Market (Agora) is still closed for renovation, so do not plan a visit around it. For a food market with children, the Saturday laiki on Minoos Street (around 08:00–14:00) is lively and colourful.
Where to Stay
Old town: everything on foot and the harbour at night, but rarely a pool and pushchair-unfriendly cobbles (a baby carrier is better). Resorts west (Agia Marina, Platanias) or east (Kalyves): pool, beach and parking, but you drive to everything else. With toddlers, a place with a pool usually wins; with older kids, the old town is fun.
Before You Go
- Book child seats with the car rental and specify the ages.
- There is no Uber or Bolt. Pre-arrange the airport taxi with child seats.
- Sun: high-factor children’s sunscreen, hats and UV swim tops.
- Water shoes for everyone.
- Do not plan more than one long drive every 2–3 days. The kids will remember the sandcastle, not the fourth beach.

Is August OK with kids?
Yes, if you go early to the beach and rest at midday. Stick to Marathi, Kalyves and Agioi Apostoloi, and save Elafonisi and Balos for June or September.
Getting Around
With children, a car makes everything easier, from tired toddlers to a change of plan due to wind.
Local tip: Do not just do Imbros and drive back. Stop at a mountain village on the way down to Sfakia, let the kids run around the square while you have a coffee, and eat by the sea at the end. That is the day they will remember.
