Aptera sits on a plateau above Souda Bay, 15 km from Chania, and most people driving to Rethymno pass two kilometres below without knowing it is there. It was one of the most powerful city-states of ancient Crete, and on one windswept hilltop you find layer after layer: Hellenistic walls, a theatre, huge Roman cisterns, a Byzantine monastery, an Ottoman fort and two German WWII pillboxes. The view over the bay is reason enough to come.

A Short History
Aptera already appears in Linear B tablets from Knossos (14th–13th century BC), but it flourished in the Hellenistic period, when it minted its own coins. Its archers fought as mercenaries around the Mediterranean and brought silver home. It had two harbours on Souda Bay, one at Marathi. The legend: the Muses defeated the Sirens here in a singing contest, the Sirens lost their feathers (a-ptera, “featherless”), fell into the sea and became the white islets you see below in the bay. An earthquake in 365 AD began its decline.
What You Will See
- Monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos: the first building you meet, built from ancient stones, with a small room and video on the site. Start here.
- Roman cisterns: the highlight. Huge vaulted underground chambers, almost intact. Stand in the middle and speak, and listen to the echo.
- Theatre: Hellenistic-Roman, restored enough to sit in, with a view across the bay.
- Walls and sanctuary: almost 4 km of polygonal walls and a small two-room temple from the 5th–4th century BC.
- Koules fortress: an Ottoman fort from after 1866, with an exhibition on the forts of Souda Bay and the best view. It is a short drive further; turn left at the last junction before the site.
- WWII pillboxes: two German positions on the western edge of the plateau, a surprise for older children.
Local tip: Go in April or May, when wildflowers cover the ruins. In summer, arrive at 08:00. By 11:00 the open plateau is very hot.

Getting There
By car, take the national road east and exit for Megala Chorafia/Aptera, then follow the road up the hill; parking is free. There is no bus to the site: the Rethymno bus stops at the junction, but from there it is a 45-minute uphill walk. By taxi, arrange the pick-up time in advance, since there is no taxi rank. No Uber or Bolt.

Aptera is a short trip from Chania town. If you prefer somewhere quieter, Kalyves and Almyrida are even closer.

Is it worth it if I am not into history?
Yes, for the view over Souda Bay, Akrotiri and the White Mountains, and for the cisterns, which impress everyone.
Is it OK for children?
Yes, for walking children: open space, cisterns and bunkers. The paths are uneven, so leave the pushchair.

Local tip: On the way back to Chania at dusk, stop at a pull-off above the village: Souda Bay below, the White Mountains turning pink. Two minutes, and it costs nothing.
