Apokoronas, Chania: The Complete Guide to Kalyves, Almyrida and the Hill Villages

Apokoronas is the green region east of Chania, between Souda Bay and Georgioupolis, from the sea up to the foot of the White Mountains. Most people pass through on the national road to Rethymno without stopping. They miss traditional villages with year-round life, calm sandy beaches inside the bay, Crete’s only freshwater lake and one of the largest ancient cities in the west. It works as a day trip, and even better as a base for a whole holiday.

It is green because water comes down from the mountains all year, feeding rivers, springs and the lake. That is why you find plane trees, orange groves and ducks here, unusual for Crete.

Where to Go

Kalyves: the practical base

Kalyves Chania

A real village with a long, shallow sandy beach split by a small river, shops, a pharmacy and tavernas that stay open all year. Buses to Chania run regularly. The easiest base without a car.

Almyrida: small and calm

Almyrida Beach

Two small sandy coves, tavernas on the water, an islet to swim to and an early Christian basilica with mosaics at the entrance. Quieter than Kalyves, seasonal, very family-friendly. Above it, Plaka has a tiny square with a view.

Vamos: the main village

Vamos Village Chania

A protected traditional village, restored house by house since the 1990s, with a bank, health centre and petrol station. Old stone lanes, village tavernas and a summer music festival in July. The logical centre for exploring the inland villages.

Gavalochori and Douliana: stone and lace

Gavalochori Chania

Gavalochori has the region’s excellent small folklore museum (search Google Maps for “Folklore Museum of Gavalochori” to avoid a dirt track), Venetian wells and the silk lace called kopaneli. From tiny Douliana, an easy path through a small gorge and past a cave chapel connects the two villages.

Vrisses: shade and yoghurt

Vrisses Chania

Where the road south to Sfakia begins. A riverside square under huge plane trees, cool even in August, with yoghurt and honey and Sfakian pies, plus an ancient stone bridge nearby. From here, the road climbs to the Askyfou plateau, one of the best drives in western Crete.

Kefalas and the Hill Villages

Kefalas, on the ridge above Almyrida, and little Xirosterni near Vamos are quiet villages with views from the White Mountains to the sea, a square and a kafeneio. Lunch here is unhurried; few visitors come.

Georgioupolis: the resort

Georgioupolis Chania

At the eastern edge of Apokoronas: a long sandy beach stretching kilometres east, a eucalyptus avenue and a small harbour with a chapel on the rocks. It has become a full resort with big hotels along the beach. Watch the flags: the open beach can have waves and currents.

Lake Kournas

Lake Kournas Chania

Crete’s only natural freshwater lake, about 4 km from Georgioupolis. Pedal boats, terrapins along the edges in the morning, tavernas on the shore. Arrive before 10:00 in summer: tour buses arrive mid-morning and the parking fills up. The lakebed is silty, so water shoes help.

Ancient Aptera

Aptera Chania

On a hill above Souda Bay, one of the largest city-states of ancient Crete: massive walls, huge Roman cisterns, a theatre and an Ottoman fort with a superb view of the bay. Small entrance fee; check the current opening hours before you go.

What Recent Visitors Keep Saying

  • “Real Crete, 30 minutes from Chania”: the inland villages are the highlight for most people.
  • “The beaches are calm but not dramatic”: great for children, but for postcard views you go west.
  • “You need a car” for the villages and the lake.
  • “Narrow village lanes”: park at the edge of the village and walk in.

Warning: In the inland villages, some lanes are too narrow for two cars and GPS sometimes sends you onto farm tracks. Stick to signed roads, drive slowly and do not take a campervan into village centres.

Suggested Day

Morning: Aptera (before it gets hot). Late morning: Vamos and the village loop via Gavalochori. Lunch in a village. Afternoon: a swim at Almyrida or Kalyves. Or, the second day: Vrisses for yoghurt, Lake Kournas early, Georgioupolis beach.

Getting There

By car, take the national road east from Chania; Kalyves and Almyrida are 25–30 minutes, Vamos 35 minutes and Georgioupolis 45 minutes. KTEL buses run to Kalyves, Almyrida and Georgioupolis; there is no bus to the lake or most inland villages. There is no Uber or Bolt; a taxi for a full day of touring is expensive.

FAQ

How many days?

One full day covers a beach and a few villages. Two days let you add the lake, Vrisses and Aptera without rushing.

Is it good for families?

Very. The beaches are shallow and calm, and the lake with its pedal boats and turtles is a hit with children.
